In previous years, this was worked around by checking your mission planning software, which determines the best time to use GNSS based on the number of satellites in range. Today, with five constellations in view (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS), it is much better to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/product-category\/products\/gnss-vertical-construction-products\/\">newer GNSS equipment<\/a> compatible with new constellations and signals.<\/p><p>Then, double check that your RTK solution type is \u201cRTK Fixed\u201d, as that provides centimetre-level accuracy, compared to \u201cRTK Float\u201d, which provides metre-level accuracy.<\/p><p>Your RTK solution type determines how a receiver counts the number of radio wavelengths between the base station and the rover &#8211; i.e. how far away the rover is.<\/p><p>When the rover obtains an RTK Fix status &#8211; also called an ambiguity resolution &#8211; it basically means the rover has precisely counted the number of radio wavelengths between the satellite and the rover with the aid of the base station data.<\/p><p>Ensure that your antennas, range poles, and circular level vials are calibrated, as well as the main base station.<\/p><p>Check your antenna cable for loose connectors and kinked cables, as these can cause noisy signal reception, higher code noise, incorrect ambiguity resolution (changing the solution type from fixed ambiguity to something less accurate), and erroneous results.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d6352f0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"d6352f0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/base-and-rover-hero-1030x655.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-101465\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/base-and-rover-hero-1030x655.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/base-and-rover-hero-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/base-and-rover-hero-768x488.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/base-and-rover-hero-400x254.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/base-and-rover-hero-500x318.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/base-and-rover-hero-600x382.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/base-and-rover-hero-700x445.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/base-and-rover-hero-1000x636.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/base-and-rover-hero.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-099f79a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"099f79a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">When and where to conduct your RTK survey<\/span><\/h2><p>RTK surveys are most accurate when the GNSS device has an unobstructed sky view, and there are plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/nz\/position-partners-nz\/satellite-navigation-systems-are-pinpointing-the-future-for-surveyors\/\">GNSS satellites<\/a> in range to take in data from. While the mission planning settings on your software can help to determine how to ensure the best results from the overhead satellites, all other factors are up to you.<\/p><p>Try to place your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/product-category\/products\/gnss-vertical-construction-products\/base-rovers\/\">RTK base station<\/a> in the open and in a stable environment. Buildings, trees, and bad weather will increase atmospheric errors and multipath, and the more errors the GNSS correction system needs to correct, the more will get through. An RTK base station needs at least 10-15 degrees of unobstructed sky view to work.<\/p><p>RTK surveying techniques can be used in conjunction with traditional surveying techniques where built-up areas are unavoidable.<\/p><p>The further away the rover is, the less accurate the data is. The distance between the rover and the base station is called the \u201cbaseline\u201d, and the baseline should be a maximum of 10-20km for accurate results. For surveying projects bigger than this, you can use multiple RTK base stations.<\/p><h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Planning the RTK survey<\/span><\/h2><p>The first step of planning your RTK survey is deciding on whether you use a network of base stations, or set up your own. Some RTK base stations are already set up and available to use with a network subscription like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/alldayrtk\/\">AllDayRTK<\/a>. The Network RTK option provides coordinates from multiple bases in your local official datum, this is the most convenient option because all you need is a rover with a 4G connection.<\/p><p>But it\u2019s not always that easy. Sometimes, you\u2019ll have to set up your own base station onsite and establish a local control.<\/p><h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">How MiRTK surveys compare to traditional RTK surveys<\/span><\/h2><p>All RTK surveys are conducted with a base station and rover, but the correction communication from the base station to the rover is different. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aptella.com\/position-partners\/leave-uhf-radios-in-the-last-decade-start-2020-off-right-with-mirtk\/\">Traditional RTK surveys use UHF<\/a> radio receivers to facilitate this communication, which require costly licencing fees, practically only has around a two kilometre range, and no security as to who is accessing or interfering with the data.
