Start-up case study: Michael Connolly of Western Survey

Michael Connolly is the owner of Western Survey based in Dubbo NSW.   After graduating from the University of Newcastle in 2007, Michael worked for a number of survey practices in the Dubbo region while securing his registration and learning his trade.   Despite the presence of a large number of competing businesses in the Dubbo market, Michael believed that he could offer something new and different, and in 2018 he established Western Survey.   We asked Michael to talk about some of the challenges he faced in starting his own business.   Michael said, ‘as an employee in a business, you spend most of your time doing field work and you’re not exposed to business development, client

The MAGNET Conference has wrapped up for another year

Another successful conference for the year! The annual MAGNET Conference, which was held on the 22nd and 23rd August, at the Intercontinental Sydney was attended by more than a hundred users from across Australia. Included in the day were workshops that were interactive training sessions. These workshops gave an insight into some of the features and methodology of the software, that wasn’t always apparent. Starting your own geospatial survey practice

Total Stations and Theodolites for sale or for hire | Aptella

For many survey and geospatial professionals, the early career pathway is similar. After completing tertiary education, they work in a survey business and over the next few years, they gain experience and perfect their craft. While working as an employee in someone else’s business suits some people well, for others, the desire to be their own boss is compelling, and they wish to strike-out on their own and set-up their own survey practice. Starting a business is a big step and often involves leaving the security of paid employment for a more uncertain financial future, but if you have a genuine passion for what you do and relish the idea of building something different or better, then running

Technology At Full Throttle For Singapore’s Grand Prix

Utilising a full range of design, mapping, variable milling, survey and paving machine control technology to transform city streets into a Formula 1 race track. For the second year running, Singapore contractor United E&P is tasked with preparing the racetrack for the country’s upcoming Formula 1 race in September. Unlike many cities that utilise existing race circuits, Singapore transforms some of the city streets into race car-worthy surfaces in a matter of days, shutting down roads for the shortest periods possible to minimise impact to residents, visitors and traffic. To meet the tight deadlines and deliver a track that will pass muster with the racing car elite, United E&P has partnered with Topcon Positioning Systems’ largest distributor in

Proximity protection for civil projects

what is machine control and how can you benefit from it

Collision awareness and proximity detection technology originally developed for the mining industry is set to become standard on major civil projects to protect workers and increase transparency for project managers. With limited space to manoeuvre and multiple heavy machines working in close proximity, roadside infrastructure projects can be a dangerous worksite. To reduce the risk of collisions between plant, people and utility or other fixed assets, geospatial positioning equipment distributor Aptella has introduced a range of proximity detection systems for civil construction applications by manufacturer Blue Electronics. Although collision awareness technology was initially developed to increase safety in mining applications, Blue Electronics’ solutions come with a enhanced features and failsafe measures to make them suitable for civil projects.
