The course is designed to ensure persons using laser emitting equipment across a range of industries have an understanding that lasers are safe to use when operated in the manner for which they were intended. Industries may include construction, manufacturing, mining, surveying, research, and industrial processing environments.
The course covers the fundamentals of laser safety, including regulatory requirements, laser classifications, hazard identification and risk assessment, and the practical implementation of laser safety procedures and control measures within the workplace.
This course aligns with the principles and guidance provided in AS/NZS IEC 60825.1:2014 and AS/NZS IEC 60825.14:2022, which outline the classification, safe use, and management of laser products. Where applicable, reference is also made to AS 2397 – Safe Use of Lasers in the Construction Industry for construction-specific applications such as surveying, alignment, and levelling.
Participants will work through the prepared training material and complete an open-book examination to assess their understanding of the subject matter. The purpose of the assessment is to determine the level of comprehension of laser safety principles and the responsibilities associated with managing laser equipment in the workplace.
As the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) is responsible for overseeing laser operators and laser equipment within their area of control, participants must demonstrate a reasonable level of competence in order to successfully complete the course.
Upon completion, participants will be equipped with the knowledge required to support safe laser use, implement appropriate control measures, and contribute to a safe and compliant laser operating environment.
The course objectives include:
- Introduction to Lasers
- Laser Hazards and Classifications
- Laser Safety Rules and Precautions
- Responsibilities of the Laser Safety Officer and Laser Operator
- Laser Safety Requirements and Regulatory Guidance
- Management and Implementation of a Laser Safety Program
- Understanding LASERS ARE SAFE! when used as intended.
