Co-Founder and retired colleague Garry Fleming will be missed by workmates, customers and industry leaders alike. He passed away on Sunday 10th March 2024 from a suspected heart attack during his regular ocean swim off Cronulla beach, south of Sydney.

Aptella (formerly Position Partners) pays tribute to Garry Fleming, a respected and much-loved leader, mentor and pioneer for the business and civil construction industry.

“As an entrepreneur, Garry was absolutely committed to our customers and passionate about enhancing their work through technology,” said Martin Nix, CEO of Aptella. “Throughout his career, he balanced hard work with a full and active life as a dedicated family man. Our thoughts are with his wife Kate, and his children and grandchildren at this time.”

Jason Curtis, Aptella Operations Manager, worked with Garry for 25 years and remembers the interest he took in his colleagues and how he role-modelled a healthy work-life balance. “He genuinely cared about people and his employees – he remembered all our kids’ names, he was always a great support and mentor to those he worked with,” he said.

Garry began his career as a surveyor, before moving into a sales role distributing survey equipment. It was during this time he met Brian McLoughlin, who was in a similar field selling laser levels. Together, they had a vision for combining their skills in enabling technology for surveying and construction applications.

In 1987 Garry and Brian founded Laserquip, distributing lasers throughout New South Wales. In 1995 they took the decision to become Topcon distributors for the same region and in 2008 they co-founded Position Partners along with their four colleague businesses around Australia.

In his time with Position Partners, Garry held several positions both in New South Wales and nationally, heading up the partnering services area of the business due to his passion for supporting customers over the long-term. He was an active member of the Civil Contractors Federation (CCF) in New South Wales.

After Brian passed away in 2016, Garry stepped in to lead the region and support his colleagues. “Despite grieving his long-term business partner and friend, he still put the needs of his team first and led us through that difficult time,” Jason said.
